My father died close enough to the holidays which made it easy to justify eating lots of homeCookies baked treats, primarily carb laden scones and cookies as I dealt with the emotional experience of loss and grief.

All my life, food has been a twisted psychological solution to stuffing my emotions and protecting my body from abuse, but of course stuffing never worked. Instead of insulating me from problems and keeping me safe, the fat was like the lid on a pressure cooker with a valve that kept me on the brink of exploding with negative self-talk and self-defeating behavior.

So knowing this, why do I keep returning to the negative and destructive behavior pattern of stuffing my body with food it doesn’t need or want?

BookExcerptAs they walked down the first flight of stairs, Sarita’s breath caught when she glanced at him. She missed her footing and would have gone head-over-ass down the steps if he hadn’t grabbed her.

The heat emanating from Matt’s body seeped into her. “Thanks. You saved me from a nasty fall.”

“You are so beautiful, Sarita.” His whispered words feathered over her cheek.

She moved forward as his lips came down on hers in a crushing kiss. The impact brought tears to her eyes and a whimper to her throat. He eased the pressure. She took the light pecks as his apology.

She desired his passion over such teasing gentleness. Her hand moved to the back of his head and held him against her mouth, opening for him as his tongue thrust in. She hung onto him for fear of tumbling down the stairs.

Swinging her around, he lifted her onto the railing, wrapping her legs around him. His hardness met the juncture of her thighs. The need to feel more of him suffused her. She rocked her hips and squeezed him closer when he moaned.

The sound of whistling broke through the haze. She eased her feet to the steps and they continued down the stairs as if she hadn’t been about to rip off his shirt.

She held onto the railing so her wobbly legs wouldn’t slide out from under her. She chanced a glance up and saw the camera. How could she have forgotten where they were?

He looked back at the space they’d just vacated and raised an eyebrow. “Blind spot,” he whispered. “Didn’t you know?”

Make 2015 a Year of Action

Thanks to Elizabeth Morgan’s blog, “Not Just a Stiff Upper Lip,” I was reminded of the importance of why I write. In the past few months I’ve put unnecessary pressure on myself to start generating an income from writing as I compared myself way too often to other authors.

I succumbed to preconceived notions, mine and others, of what it meant to be a successful author, and let myself feel I was only successful if I could generate an immediate income. My outlook sucked a lot of the joy out of the writing process. Book sales are obviously important, but I made that more important than my actual work.

Writing gives me pleasure and I don’t want that to change.

Even writing my emotionally charged non-fiction work on the effects of sexual abuse gives me satisfaction. Book Covers

This year I will relax in the writing process, shifting my focus from what others are doing income and content-wise to concentrating on my own ideas. The most important change I will be making is to express gratitude more often for not having to work while I write my stories.

New Year'sI think that when we take our thoughts out of our heads and put them into writing or some other form of self-expression, that we will manifest those desires. I selfishly made my Christmas and 2015 New Year’s wish list about me, but  I think it’s always been that way, and so it should be. After all, we have to take care of ourselves before we can address the needs of others.

  • May I keep the Spirit of Christmas year round, remembering to give to those in genuine need, be it of my time, money, or prayers.
  • May I remember to honor my body through healthy foods and physical exercise.
  • May I continually honor my mind with meditation, prayer, and gratitude.
  • May I remember that although I don’t have to hang out with toxic people, be them family or former friends, that I can still wish the best for them, as what I send out in thought comes back to me as well.
  • May I remember always to keep my thoughts positive, my words peaceful, and my actions filled with love.
  • May I hold the hopes and visions of others in their highest good and use my energy to help co-create their dreams, as well as my own.Make a Wish

Often times I dream my books, and have been finding out that quite a few authors I’ve been meeting do the same. My “book dreams” come across like a fully developed movie in a theater, or they come in a few chapters a night for several nights in a row. But is this “cheating,” as if the ideas aren’t my own?

DEATH HOUSE COVER-200x300The idea for Death House was conceived when my 29 year-old daughter was still in grade school, and she challenged me to write a story as scary as R.L. Stine. Although it took many years to get out the door as I built up my confidence as a writer, Death House provided many enjoyable hours of dialogue and discussion with my daughters.

I wrote Death House to easily translate into film, just in case!

Although the cover doesn’t describe the demonic creature in my story, it conveys the image of something creepy crawling out of a dark portal. I’d give Death House a PG-13 rating for minimal swearing and some gore. It has a sweet romantic sub-plot between the two main characters, Adley Lange and Victor Trumillo. (Kristen, I hope you don’t mind that I borrowed Adley’s beautiful name!)
